about

Recorded by Shane Edge at 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Mixed by Jeremy Kennedy and Sha' Ledge at FMSMPRC HQ.
Cover Art by Crab Jackson.

The year: 2007. The place:Earth. After an almost five year hiatus, not including several compilation spots and guest appearances, we find Shane Edge back with a refreshing new recording ... Hose Adjuster.

This uhm record establishes itself solidly, even in an age where people across the globe are calling for an end to such "tard-o tape jams".
The beauty and importance of this album stems from the concepts behind it Concepts that I the writer cannot find ... anywhere. At le<:Ht not anywhere I happen to be looking. No, the concepts I am speaking of exist not on a definite plane, but rather as an unspoken soulfulness. A sort of quagmire of typographical errors steeped with a teabag of electric razors.

The other charming quality of this Hose Adjuster joint is the evident change in recording style. Edge has seemingly abandoned the modern standard of recording technique, and taken to the refuge of his vehicle. A solid gold Jeep nowactsas his altar before which he lays his classic and wire stripped tongue. This mobile recording facility is equipped with not one, not two, not three, but four cassette recording and playback machines.

A certain intimacy is inherently present throughout this album. Much of this is due to the situational structure of the recording in combination with the artistic capture of Shane Edge's on-the-spot, cerebral / anti-cerebral poetic takes and tokens. Here the listener finds him/herself sitting in the passenger seat of artist's golden chariot. Whether it be en route to work, on the road to places abroad, or simple trip to the local headshop; you are there experiencing the exact moment of inspiration vocalized.

One Apple is the perfect introduction to Hose Adjuster. It's a fine morning in grandma's kitchen and members of the family have just begun to arrive. Things are moving along swimmingly.

The stove is hot and this adds an element of danger to the gathering. Kids, as we all know, are little maniacs wrapped in warm, soft blankets of love. Shabba Ranks makes a cameo and Grandma recites a haiku in the original Japanese.

Throughout the track we find small buttons being pushed by small fingers. These fantastic popping noises offer an added "edge" to this audio commotion; reality music at a highly evolved state.

Youth wins out over integrity on this record. Especially on this gemstone ... l Will Bother You. Man hunts because he desires to be hunted. A bass heavy rendition of a tradi-tional folk song written by Edge himself. Reminiscent of earlier material by B.W. Baute and the Bosco Sticks. A shining example of how not writing a song form can be a major benefit to the song itself.

On Dwelt: Edge leaves the research facility. Under one arm he hides a small package containing straight lines, deodorant, and chrome. Minutes later he arrives at a crowded train station. The boarding passangers become lost in his growl asit seems to influence the passage of the air around them. Brain twist guitar scrape, a metronome count, the bubbling sound of young plantains, and finally ... more Shabba!

Year 320... These scream sessions...what are they? Scored ugly uncle seeks robot gardener for"Survivor"" type nosebleed and shotgun wedding. My uncleand l areaboutthe same height. Shane Edge is shorter than that. Fred Smith is (was) shorter than him, I think. l"m not 100% sure about that. l"m just working off of a couple of photos. Shane looks much taller in this one. That could just be the angle of perspective.

Pharoah Neck: Shawn Egg breaks all the rules of taut rightousness on this number. Taking it back to the shred/thread list and converting his quantum mags to CD audio. In part, the sound on this is brought to you courtesy of "Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs". At the end of the track you can clearly make out Edge proclaim the the union official by yelling "AHHH, the Pharaohs! • This, and the bass heavy country sing-a-long are a definite unlikely pairing, but sometimes it is really hard to find something on the radio.

Disturbing Heart is a terrific improvement upon Arlen and Koehler's composition 'Stormy Weather". A combina tion of one of my personally favorite vocal jazz tunes and Shane's distinctive stylings. The atypical malfunctions of a cassette recorder as only he can inflict. This take reveals an angle never before approached on Edge's recordings. In audio form and in concept, this track is only a slight shade off from the magic of turntablism.

Harmonizing with gnat like buzzing action? One voice in particular on Hi Recorder, Pay Attention snags itself on the most 􀁦ensitive of cilia. The voice of a broken old man. A voice harvested from a secret field of marijuana plants growing behind barbed wire, and shielded from above by a mesh tarp. Even in the awfulneHof thismix, this defining element remains completely intact. A singular grunt amongst the Maoist moans of a nation in triumph. This one will infect your ________ . The thing embodied here will hook you with more power than fifteen Christina A songs, and sucks you in deeper than one episode(s) of Buffy.

My Brain's in Pieces: Herand her hair with it's natural oil, and the mystery of why the oil is there. Chemistry, teases and it hung down. Close to the sides of her face. Usually she draped it over her face and I swear I caught a glimpse of the oil collecting at the end of a group of strands before it dripped off onto her cute, tiny chin. Her dark eyes. Blank, seemingly void of the basic human response. l was fucked up inside my own Clamwich, just when you thought I was not.

Volition starts off with a prime example of how we greet each other in the state of Indiana. You see, we repeat the same phrase twice, because we're idiots. After experiencing this salutation as an intro, we follow Shane to Venezuala While there he was kind enough to record his interaction with the elevator at the airport and his interrogation of a six year old child concerning something to do with the dead sea scroll(s). If you believe in that kind of shit. An abso lutely incredible field recording ... from the field! Thank you Shane Edge.

You,the listener, will have anight to remember and inthe morning you will say to yourself, "I had a night to remember." Mr. Edge's memory is really terrible. This fact becomes painfully apparent on this recording.

However, thanks to this captivating document, every man, woman, and/or child will continue to utter the phrase, "I was hoping for more"... ever more and again.
